What to wear in Lofoten

Layering is more useful than one very heavy garment, because wind, rain and temperature can shift quickly.

1

Base layer

Merino wool or technical fabric

Choose a breathable layer that moves moisture away from your skin. Avoid cotton for longer hikes in cool or wet weather.

2

Warm mid-layer

Fleece, wool or light puffer

Add insulation that is easy to remove when walking uphill and quick to put back on during stops.

3

Weatherproof shell

Windproof and waterproof

A hooded shell jacket is one of the most useful items in Lofoten. Waterproof trousers are valuable on wet and windy days.

Proper footwear

Grippy hiking shoes or boots

Trails can be muddy, rocky and slippery. Use sturdy footwear with reliable grip and bring wool socks.

Small essentials

Hat · gloves · water · dry layer

Pack a hat, light gloves, water, snacks and a dry spare layer, even when the day begins warm and sunny.

Seasonal extras

Sunglasses · headlamp · microspikes

Bring sunglasses for summer and snow glare, a headlamp during darker months, and traction equipment when winter conditions require it.

Mountain weather can differ greatly from conditions in town. Turn around when visibility, wind, snow or terrain feels unsafe.
